Something's Not Working. Let's Find Out Why.

Tripped circuit breakers that won't reset. Lights that flicker for no obvious reason. Sockets that stopped working. An extension lead that trips the whole circuit when plugged in.

Electrical faults are often frustrating because they're invisible — you can't see what's wrong. JM Sparks Electrical LTD uses professional diagnostic equipment to trace faults quickly, explain exactly what we found, and fix it properly.

Common Electrical Faults We Diagnose and Fix

  • Tripping circuit breakers — breakers that trip immediately or after a short period of use
  • RCD tripping — the whole board going off when a specific appliance is plugged in
  • Dead circuits — lights or sockets that have stopped working completely
  • Intermittent faults — circuits that work sometimes but not others (often the hardest to trace)
  • Burning smell — overheating connections, degraded insulation, or overloaded circuits
  • Sparking sockets — arcing inside the socket or at connections
  • Flickering lights — loose connections, overloaded circuits, or failing transformers
  • High electricity bills — possible faulty appliances or wiring causing unnecessary power draw

How We Find Electrical Faults

  1. Initial assessment: We talk through the symptoms, when they started, and what changed. This often narrows the search immediately.
  2. Visual inspection: We inspect the consumer unit, relevant circuits, sockets, and switches for obvious signs of damage or deterioration.
  3. Instrument testing: Using professional test meters, we measure insulation resistance, continuity, and earth impedance to identify the fault location.
  4. Fault isolation: We isolate the fault to a specific circuit, section of circuit, or individual connection.
  5. Repair and test: We fix the fault, then re-test the circuit to confirm it's safe before restoring power.
  6. Documentation: For notifiable work, we provide the relevant certificates. For all work, we provide a clear explanation of what was found and fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions — Electrical Fault Finding

How long does fault finding take?

Simple faults (a failed socket, a loose connection) can be found and fixed in under an hour. Intermittent faults or wiring problems in older properties can take longer. We'll keep you updated as we work.

My RCD keeps tripping — what should I do?

First, try unplugging everything from the circuit that's tripping and resetting the RCD. If it stays on, plug appliances back in one at a time — the one that causes it to trip again is likely faulty. If unplugging everything doesn't stop the tripping, there's a wiring fault. Call us.

Is the fault finding charge separate from the repair?

The diagnostic time and repair time are both charged by the hour. Once we find the fault, we'll give you a clear price for the repair before we proceed.

Can you fix faults in commercial properties?

Yes. We carry out fault finding and repairs in domestic and commercial properties. For commercial premises, we'll work around your operating hours where possible.
