Keep Your Business Compliant and Your People Safe

Every electrical appliance in your workplace needs to be safe to use. PAT testing is the recognised process for checking portable electrical equipment — from laptops to floor lamps to power tools.

JM Sparks Electrical LTD provides fast, professional PAT testing across Solihull, Birmingham, and the West Midlands. We'll test your equipment, label everything pass or fail, and provide a full written report and certificate.

What Is PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) involves a visual inspection and electrical tests on portable electrical equipment. A portable appliance is any piece of equipment connected to the mains via a plug — computers, kettles, extension leads, power tools, monitors, lamps, and more.

Each item is tested for earth continuity, insulation resistance, and other safety checks depending on the appliance type. Items that pass receive a dated pass sticker. Failed items are labelled fail and must be removed from service.

Is PAT Testing a Legal Requirement?

Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are required to maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised method of demonstrating this compliance.

There's no specific law that mandates PAT testing by name, but failure to test and a subsequent electrical incident could expose your business to significant legal liability. Most insurance policies and landlord agreements also require regular PAT testing.

How Often Should You PAT Test?

  • Offices: Every 1–2 years for low-risk equipment; annually for higher use items
  • Schools and educational premises: Annually
  • Retail and hospitality: Annually
  • Construction sites and high-risk environments: Every 3 months for equipment in use
  • Rental properties (HMOs): Annually, or before each new tenancy

We'll help you establish a testing schedule based on your premises and equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions — PAT Testing

How long does PAT testing take?

For a typical office of 50–100 items, expect 2–4 hours. We work efficiently and minimise disruption to your day.

Do we need to switch off during testing?

Most testing can be done with minimal disruption. We'll co-ordinate with you to test areas at convenient times. Computers and servers can be tested while powered down if preferred.

What happens with failed items?

Failed items are labelled and must be removed from service. We'll provide a report noting why each item failed and whether it's repairable.

Do you test at evenings or weekends?

Yes — we can accommodate out-of-hours testing for premises that can't be disrupted during the working day. Ask about weekend and evening rates.
