When Your Wiring Needs a Complete Overhaul
Modern electrical demands — smart home systems, EV chargers, multiple TVs, computers, and kitchen appliances — put enormous strain on older wiring. If your property was last rewired before 1990, the wiring may be reaching the end of its useful life.
JM Sparks Electrical LTD carries out full property rewires across Solihull, Birmingham, and the West Midlands, working to BS 7671:2018 standards with minimal disruption and full certification.
Signs You May Need a Rewire
- Old rubber-insulated wiring (black rubber cables) — these are past their safe lifespan
- Aluminium wiring — used in some 1960s–1970s properties, requires upgrading
- Sockets and switches that feel warm or show scorch marks
- Frequently blown fuses or tripping breakers with no obvious cause
- Lights that flicker or fail regularly
- An EICR showing multiple C1 or C2 defects that aren't economical to address individually
- You're doing major home renovations — it makes sense to rewire while walls are open
What's Included in a Full Rewire
- Complete removal of existing cables and installation of new PVC-sheathed wiring
- New consumer unit (fuse board) — dual RCD, all circuits protected
- New socket outlets, light switches, and light fittings (positions as agreed)
- Main earthing and bonding to current regulations
- Testing and commissioning of all circuits
- Part P notification to building control (included)
- Electrical Installation Certificate issued on completion
- Building Regulations Compliance Certificate

Frequently Asked Questions — House Rewire
Do I need to move out during a rewire?
In most cases, no — though it can be disruptive. We'll discuss this with you at survey stage. Some customers prefer to stay elsewhere during the first fix phase. We'll restore power to as much of the property as possible at the end of each working day.
Will there be much mess?
A rewire involves chasing walls and lifting floorboards. We make good any surface damage as part of the job and leave the site clean at the end of each day. Plasterers are usually required after a rewire — we can recommend local tradespeople if needed.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. All work is carried out to BS 7671:2018 and covered by our 12-month workmanship guarantee. The Electrical Installation Certificate provides a formal record of the installation.
